The 2021 The Pict Mataro is a svelte, spicy thing, totally evocative and earthy. The fruit is from a 1901 planting, planted in the middle of a paddock. "There's sheep and one tree. And some rocks," says winemaker Ian Hongell. Mulberry compote, pink peppercorn, red earth, salted licorice and black olive brine, the palate is built around a core of red fruit; it has clarity and poise, which is saying something great in a wine that is a) 100% Mataro (a.k.a. Mourvèdre) and b) a wine with as much volume as this. It's awesome. Really good. Brilliant in this fine vintage. 14% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax.

I'm a fan of the Pict. Torbreck do old-vine mataro well. Real well. The trademark house concentration and fruit intensity are certainly there. The wild-eyed spice, meaty facets and varietal garrigue are in abundance too, with this crazy crackling energy, a cross between ferruginous, granitic and quartzy that shapeshifts constantly. Kinetic, silty tannins morph in and out, too, and there is a real, sapid vital cadence to the wine. Great spicy drinking. Me gusta.

Founded in 1994 by David Powell, Torbreck is celebrated for its dedication to Rhône varietals and old-vine vineyards, many of which date back to the 19th century. The Pict Mataro is sourced from a single, low-yielding vineyard, showcasing Torbreck's commitment to crafting wines of depth and regional character. Named for the ancient Picts, this wine embodies the intensity and rugged beauty of Barossa’s Mataro.

Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, and dried herbs, complemented by hints of earth, spice, and leather. The palate is dense and full-bodied, featuring flavors of black cherry, licorice, and savory notes, supported by firm tannins and balanced acidity. A long, layered finish highlights the wine’s complexity and the concentration imparted by Barossa’s old vines.
