2021 Tyrrell's Stevens Semillon, Hunter Valley

Sourced from the Stevens family’s Glen Oak vineyard, a combination of light sand and red clay, the southernmost of the vineyards Tyrrell’s uses. One of the shining stars from the cool '21 vintage, with its lilting, citrusy aromas. It has energy and lift, with graceful, sweet lemon flavours and a hint of greengages. It is light and lovely, with moderate concentration and palate softness. Drink to 2029.

Very pure aromas of citrus here, such as lemon, grapefruit and yuzu, as well as a gently flinty edge. The palate delivers very intense lime and lemon flavors that hold fine and long. Concentrated drive. Will age so well. Drink over the next decade.

Stevens Semillon comes from the Stevens Vineyard, a site on Marrowbone Road in Pokolbin featuring a combination of light, sandy loams and darker, heavier transitional soil, with the oldest vines on this site date back to 1911.

The 2021 season was set for success after substantial winter rainfalls breaking a period of drought. Cool and trouble-free, Semillon matured to display full flavours while retaining high natural acidity in a season that saw red varieties in many vineyards struggle to ripen.

Winemaking followed now established Hunter traditions for Semillon wines: the grapes were pressed on arrival to the winery and the free-run juice fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures, the wine remaining on its lees until blending and bottling in July.
