Alan McCorkindale Pinot Gris from the Waipara Valley is a quietly expressive, beautifully balanced wine that reflects both the cool climate precision of North Canterbury and the thoughtful hand of one of the region’s most respected growers. Waipara sits just north of Christchurch, sheltered by hills yet strongly influenced by cool ocean air. Limestone and clay soils play a big role here, giving wines natural tension, texture and a savoury edge that suits Pinot Gris perfectly.

Alan McCorkindale is best known for his deep connection to Waipara, particularly through long term vineyard work and an instinctive understanding of the valley’s subtleties. His approach to Pinot Gris is all about clarity and balance rather than excess. Fruit is picked at a point where flavour is generous but acidity remains bright, allowing the wine to sit comfortably between freshness and texture.

In the glass, the wine is gently aromatic rather than overt. Nashi pear, ripe pear and white peach sit at the core, followed by hints of apple skin, citrus blossom and a soft spice note. There is a faint limestone like minerality that adds quiet complexity and keeps the aromatics focused.

On the palate, Alan McCorkindale Pinot Gris is supple and finely textured. Orchard fruit flavours flow easily across the palate, supported by fresh acidity and a gentle phenolic grip that gives shape without weight. The wine feels dry and composed, with a subtle savoury undertone that builds through the mid palate and carries into a clean, lingering finish.

This is a Pinot Gris made for food and versatility. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, pork, dumplings, seafood, Asian inspired dishes or vegetable driven plates. Drinking very well now for its balance and charm, it will also hold nicely over the next two to four years, gaining extra savoury detail with time.

Alan McCorkindale Pinot Gris is understated, regional and deeply drinkable. A Waipara Valley white that favours texture, freshness and quiet confidence over showy aromatics.
