2022 Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley

The 2022 Chardonnay Watson Ranch shows lovely textural depth and resonance. Dried pear, spice, menthol, dried flowers and herbs fill out the layers nicely. The balance here is sublime. This is an especially savory, earthy Chardonnay, with fruit pushed into the background. The 2022 is all class.

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts founded Arnot-Roberts in 2001, building a reputation for some of California's most distinctive, finely balanced wines. Friends since childhood, the pair favour carefully chosen vineyards, thoughtful farming and a restrained approach in the cellar. Their Chardonnays are particularly impressive, capturing the energy and mineral character of cooler coastal sites rather than the overt richness often associated with Napa Valley.

Watson Ranch lies in the southern reaches of Napa Valley, in the cool Los Carneros region, where maritime influences from San Pablo Bay help Chardonnay retain its natural acidity. The vineyard's limestone influenced soils contribute to the wine's distinctive mineral character. The 2022 combines the generosity of a warm California vintage with the freshness and restraint that define the Arnot-Roberts style.

Pale straw yellow with delicate golden reflections. Meyer lemon, crisp yellow apple and white peach mingle with chamomile, fresh almond and a subtle hint of sea spray. The palate is beautifully textured, with succulent citrus fruit, lively acidity and a gentle savoury richness. Notes of crushed stone, lemon peel and toasted hazelnut carry through a long, refreshing finish.

Try it with grilled swordfish and fennel, Japanese miso glazed eggplant, or roasted cauliflower with tahini and preserved lemon. Its lovely balance of richness and freshness would also work beautifully with a delicate crab and sweetcorn tart.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2032. Already expressive, with the structure and freshness to develop further complexity over the coming years.
