2022 Audrey Wilkinson Winemaker’s Selection Tempranillo, Hunter Valley

Audrey Wilkinson, founded in 1866, is one of the Hunter Valley’s oldest and most picturesque wineries, with vineyards perched high on the foothills of the Brokenback Mountain Range. The elevated sites enjoy cooling breezes, abundant sunshine, and well-drained volcanic and sandy loam soils, which are ideal for crafting vibrant, medium-bodied reds. The Winemaker’s Selection Tempranillo reflects both the Hunter’s warm climate suitability for Iberian varieties and Audrey Wilkinson’s focus on small-batch, premium winemaking. Fruit is hand-selected from parcels chosen for their concentration and balance, then vinified with gentle handling to highlight freshness and varietal character before maturation in seasoned French oak.

In the glass, it shows a deep crimson hue with lifted aromas of ripe red cherry, plum, and raspberry, accented by notes of violet, tobacco leaf, and a subtle savoury spice. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy, and supple, with bright red and dark berry fruit framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The French oak influence is understated, adding a touch of cedar and clove while letting the fruit shine. True to the Tempranillo style, it finishes long, savoury, and food-friendly, with a hint of earthy complexity.

It pairs beautifully with lamb cutlets and chimichurri, roasted duck with orange and thyme, chargrilled chorizo, or roasted Mediterranean vegetables with smoked paprika. Best enjoyed in its vibrant youth, it will also evolve gracefully over 5 to 7 years, developing softer tannins and more savoury depth.
