Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Ridge Syrah from Swartland is a vibrant and approachable red that showcases the quality and energy of one of South Africa’s most exciting wine regions. Crafted by the acclaimed Boekenhoutskloof team, led by winemaker and viticulturist Marc Kent, this wine captures the generosity of Swartland’s sun-drenched vineyards and the finesse that defines the estate’s style.
The Syrah grapes are sourced from elevated sites on decomposed granite and shale soils, which provide excellent drainage and natural concentration. Warm days and cool nights allow the fruit to ripen slowly, preserving freshness and aromatics. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with regular pump-overs to extract colour and flavour, followed by maturation in a mix of French oak barrels and large foudres to build texture and subtle complexity.
In the glass it shows deep crimson with violet highlights. The aroma is expressive and inviting, featuring black cherry, plum, and blueberry interwoven with pepper, smoked meat, and dried herbs. The palate is medium to full bodied, offering juicy dark fruit and savoury spice framed by fine tannins and bright acidity. It finishes long, supple, and beautifully balanced, a Syrah that’s both generous and refined.
It’s ideal with grilled meats, charcuterie, lamb skewers, or spiced dishes like Moroccan tagine or roasted eggplant. Delicious now for its freshness and fruit purity, it will also evolve gracefully for up to eight years.
