The balsamic, primary and juicy red 2022 Serras del Priorat is a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah produced in an approachable way. It has a soft palate and some dusty tannins. It matured in used 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels for seven months. It's fruit-driven, with ripe fruit and 14.5% alcohol, keeping good freshness and balance. 17,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
Clos Figueras, the Priorat project from Christopher and Charlotte Cannan, has expanded into Montsant too. They have 12 hectares of vines in production and have planted 7,000 more vines of Garnacha, Viognier and Cabernet Franc (!). They produce 40,000 bottles per year.

Clos Figueras Serras del Priorat is a beautifully crafted red wine from the rugged and celebrated region of Priorat in Catalunya, Spain. Produced by the esteemed Clos Figueras estate, this wine is a true expression of the unique terroir and grape varieties that define the region. Known for its balance, complexity, and approachability, Serras del Priorat offers a compelling introduction to the power and elegance of Priorat wines.
The vineyards of Clos Figueras are located near the village of Gratallops, in the heart of Priorat. The region is famed for its dramatic slate and quartz soils, known locally as llicorella, which impart a distinctive minerality and structure to the wines. The Mediterranean climate, with hot days and cool nights, allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and vibrant acidity.
Serras del Priorat is a blend of Garnacha (Grenache), Carignan, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing the diversity of grape varieties that thrive in this unique terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Vinification combines traditional and modern techniques, with fermentation in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aging in a mix of French oak barrels and vats to add depth and texture.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby color with purple highlights. The nose is aromatic and expressive, with notes of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherries, raspberries, and blackberries, complemented by hints of Mediterranean herbs, violets, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a well-integrated acidity. Flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and a subtle mineral edge lead to a long, elegant finish.
Serras del Priorat is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with roasted meats, grilled lamb chops, or hearty vegetable dishes like ratatouille. It also complements aged cheeses or Spanish charcuterie, making it an excellent choice for gatherings. While ready to enjoy now, this wine has the structure to age gracefully for 5-7 years.
