2022 Clyde Park Single Block B3 Chardonnay, Geelong

From a vineyard planted in 1995 (rows 69 to 85); whole-bunch pressed then barrel fermented and matured in French puncheons (65% new) with gentle lees stirring and no mlf. A bright green gold. An engaging bouquet from the start with its aromas of clingstone peach, apple blossom, oyster shell and grilled nuts. Concentrated and textured through the mid-palate, it's tensile, too, on the long, polished finish. A class act from go to whoa.

Clyde Park Single Block B3 Chardonnay from Geelong is a striking example of cool-climate Australian Chardonnay at its most focused and refined. Grown on the estate’s windswept slopes in the Moorabool Valley, Block B3 sits on a mix of volcanic basalt and limestone — soils that consistently produce Chardonnay with intensity, drive and a distinct mineral thread. This is a wine that captures the power and linearity of Geelong, but tempers it with finesse and beautifully handled oak.

The fruit is hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barriques, around 30 to 40 percent of which are new. Partial malolactic fermentation and extended lees ageing contribute richness and texture, but the winemaking never overshadows the purity of the site.

It offers aromas of lemon pith, nectarine, cashew and struck match, with hints of white flowers and wet stone. The palate is taut and finely detailed, showing citrus and stone fruit layered with flinty acidity, creamy lees and just the right amount of oak spice. There’s length and quiet power here — it’s tightly coiled but promises more with time.

Food pairing: perfect with grilled spatchcock, butter-poached crayfish, roast cauliflower with almond cream or chicken and tarragon pie. Also beautiful with Comté or a delicate white fish in beurre blanc.

Cellar potential: already expressive but will age effortlessly over the next 8 to 12 years, gaining savoury, nutty complexity and softening its mineral spine.
