Rich, floral citrus aromas and flavours with zesty acidity from Tasmania’s south
Aromatic and bright, this textural Riesling walks a fine line between fruit weight and tangy, zesty acidity. Featuring a rich kaleidoscope of floral citrus aromas and flavours, it offers beautiful drinking on release as well as long-term cellaring potential.
This would handle food with clean fats, fragrant green herbs and rich textures while elevating the dish with its aromatics. Try with salt and pepper squid, or maybe a pork schnitzel with a crisp fennel, green apple and dill slaw.
More about this wine
The fruit for this Riesling comes from the highest part of Derwent Estate’s home vineyard, a north facing parcel of 30-year-old vines on well-draining loams over limestone.
The hand-picked fruit was pressed under inert gas and slowly fermented with a cultured yeast at cool temperatures of maximum ten degrees. The wine is stabilised, lightly fined and filtered prior to early bottling.
About this producer
Derwent Estate was established in 1992 when Trevor and Pat Hanigan planted their first vines on their Granton property in Tasmania’s Derwent River Valley. Local farmers since 1913, their son Andrew Hanigan represents the fifth generation on the site and is today the viticulturist of the family business.
Winemaker John Schuts has made the wines since 2003, initially as an external contract winemaker and since 2013 in-house, soon thereafter becoming a co-owner in the business.
Fruit is sourced mainly from the original site, today spreading over 20 hectares. This is supplemented by fruit from an additional, more recently acquired Coal River site, and smaller amounts bought from other growers across Tasmania.
