2022 Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc, Burgundy

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Blanc Clos de l'Arlot 1er Cru was taken from tank on the lees before filtration and fining. Aged in 25% new oak, it offers pretty apple blossom, gooseberry and persimmon scents that gradually unfold, though never completely let loose. The palate is well-balanced, with noticeable weight and heft on the entry. This is a concentrated white Burgundy, yet Géraldine Godot manages to retain sufficient tension and poise, elongating the finish. Apparently, this bottle had opened up considerably since being uncorked the previous day. Touch of ginger on the aftertaste. Punchy!”

This cuvée now covers all the plots, as La Gerbotte is included in Arlot, given that the vines are now 30 years old after all. Racked to tank but neither fined nor filtered yet. 25% new wood just features lightly on the nose, rather more evident on the palate. There is adequate concentration of white fruit, with a saline apple finish. The oak needs to calm down, as I am sure it will.

Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits Saint Georges Premier Cru Clos de l’Arlot Blanc is one of Burgundy’s rarest and most distinctive white wines, made from a tiny monopole vineyard in a village far better known for its reds. This is a Chardonnay of remarkable purity and finesse, crafted from a Premier Cru site that lies within the historic walls of the Clos de l’Arlot, and made with the same biodynamic care and attention as the domaine’s revered reds.

Clos de l’Arlot is a true walled vineyard, or clos, just south of the town of Nuits Saint Georges. It has been under vine since the 18th century and has belonged exclusively to Domaine de l’Arlot since the late 1980s. The Chardonnay is planted in the upper section of the vineyard where limestone-rich soils and cooler exposure bring freshness and tension to the wine. Though rare—only a handful of producers make white Nuits Saint Georges—this cuvée has become a cult favourite among those who seek elegance and texture in their white Burgundy.

Under the guidance of winemaker Géraldine Godot, Domaine de l’Arlot farms biodynamically and focuses on expressing terroir with precision. The Chardonnay is fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (around 20–25 percent new), and matured on fine lees for up to a year, giving the wine a creamy texture without compromising its mineral core.

In the glass, Clos de l’Arlot Blanc offers lifted aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, crushed stone, hazelnut, and a hint of flint. The palate is focused and textural with ripe orchard fruits, zesty acidity, and a long, mineral finish that lingers with elegance and quiet power. It’s a wine that bridges the delicacy of Côte de Beaune whites with the intensity and individuality of its Côte de Nuits origins.

Perfect with poached fish, shellfish, or roast chicken with tarragon, this is a rare Premier Cru white Burgundy that deserves a place in any serious collection.
