2022 Domaine Jolivet L'Instinct Saint Joseph, Northern Rhone

Domaine Jolivet L Instinct Saint Joseph Northern Rhone is a beautifully structured Saint Joseph Syrah from the granite terraces of the Northern Rhone Valley. The Jolivet family have long standing ties to this dramatic stretch of vineyard that runs along the right bank of the Rhone River. Working steep, hand tended parcels, they focus on low yields and traditional methods to allow the granite soils and cool Mistral influence to define the wine. L Instinct reflects their philosophy of purity, restraint and respect for classic Northern Rhone Syrah.

The colour is deep ruby with vibrant violet edges. Aromas build steadily in the glass with blackberry, black cherry and dark plum layered over cracked black pepper, violet, olive tapenade and a gentle whisper of smoked meat. There is a lifted mineral note that speaks clearly of Saint Joseph’s decomposed granite soils, giving freshness and precision rather than weight.

The palate is medium to full bodied with confident structure and energy. Dark forest fruits flow across a frame of savoury spice, graphite and finely judged oak. Tannins are firm yet polished, shaping the wine without overwhelming it, while natural acidity keeps the finish long and vibrant. The overall impression is classic Saint Joseph Syrah with elegance, savoury depth and regional authenticity.

This is a superb partner for rosemary roasted lamb, duck with black olive and thyme, slow braised beef cheeks or char grilled eggplant with herbs. Decant if drinking now, or cellar for eight to twelve years to allow further development of leather, earth and savoury complexity.
