Aromatic and captivating, this wine weaves violet into a compact layer of cassis, light musk, and warm earth, creating a perfume-like bouquet that is both deep and delicately floral. On the palate, it's beautifully balanced, with black fruit nestled between a firm, stony texture that adds structure and depth. Approachable now, it's a wine that shines with elegance. Pair it with delicate meat dishes, such as roasted lamb or a fine duck breast, for a perfect match that enhances its nuanced character. — Anna-Christina Cabrales

When wine lovers talk about the great value estates of the Southern Rhône, Domaine La Soumade is never far from the conversation. Founded by André Roméro and now working alongside his son Frédéric, the family estate has become the benchmark producer of Rasteau, consistently delivering wines that rival far more expensive Châteauneuf du Pape. Situated in one of the Rhône's warmest villages, La Soumade has built an international reputation for producing richly flavoured, beautifully balanced wines that offer extraordinary quality for the price.
The vineyards are planted on clay and limestone slopes around Rasteau, where old Grenache vines thrive in the Mediterranean sunshine. Grenache dominates the blend, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre, creating a wine that captures the generosity and power of the region while maintaining freshness and structure. The outstanding 2022 vintage produced fruit with excellent concentration, allowing the Roméro family to craft a wine of depth, complexity and remarkable drinkability.
Deep crimson red with purple highlights, the bouquet is packed with aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum, layered with lavender, dried thyme and cracked pepper. As the wine opens, notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and warm spice add further complexity. Full flavoured yet beautifully composed, the palate delivers waves of dark berry fruit, black olive and savoury garrigue character. Velvety tannins and fresh acidity create balance and energy, while the finish lingers with spice, herbs and ripe fruit.
This is exactly the sort of Rhône red that belongs at the centre of a hearty meal. Pair it with slow roasted lamb shoulder, chargrilled ribeye, duck cassoulet, smoky eggplant with tomato and olive ragù or a mushroom and lentil shepherd's pie. Delicious now with a decant, it will continue to evolve over the next eight to twelve years.
One of the Southern Rhône's great bargains, Domaine La Soumade consistently delivers a level of quality that punches well above its price point. For lovers of rich, characterful Grenache based reds, it remains one of the smartest buys in French wine.
