Donnafugata is one of Sicily’s most respected and dynamic wine producers, founded in 1983 by Giacomo Rallo and his wife Gabriella Anca. Today, the estate is run by their children, José and Antonio Rallo, who continue the family’s mission of crafting wines that capture the island’s diverse terroirs with both tradition and innovation. The Sedara is part of Donnafugata’s Sicilia DOC range, sourced from vineyards in the southwest of the island near Contessa Entellina, as well as other selected sites. These vineyards enjoy warm Mediterranean sunshine moderated by coastal breezes, with clay-limestone soils that give the fruit both ripeness and freshness.
The Sedara is a blend dominated by Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s signature red grape, supported by Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. In the glass, it shows a vivid ruby colour and opens with aromas of ripe red cherry, plum, and blackberry, accented by hints of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice, and a touch of cocoa. The palate is medium-bodied, offering juicy red and dark berry fruit wrapped in soft tannins, with lively acidity and a savoury edge that adds depth. Gentle oak ageing lends subtle notes of vanilla and toast, keeping the wine fresh and vibrant while adding just enough complexity.
This versatile red pairs beautifully with classic Sicilian pasta alla norma, grilled swordfish with caponata, roast chicken with rosemary, or a charcuterie board of salumi and aged pecorino. Best enjoyed young for its fruit-forward style, it can also be cellared for up to five years for a softer, more savoury expression.
