Escarpment, founded in 1998 by Larry McKenna and now part of the Foley Wines portfolio, is one of Martinborough’s most respected producers, known for crafting wines that express the distinctive character of the Te Muna Road terraces. The Chardonnay is sourced from estate and local grower vineyards planted on alluvial gravel terraces, with free-draining soils that naturally restrict yields and enhance flavour concentration. Martinborough’s cool, dry climate and long ripening season give Chardonnay fruit that is both ripe and finely structured, with bright acidity and mineral drive. The winemaking team works with a hands-off philosophy, using wild yeast fermentation, full or partial malolactic fermentation, and maturation in French oak to add depth and texture while preserving freshness.
The Escarpment Chardonnay pours pale straw with green glints and opens with aromas of white nectarine, lemon curd, and grapefruit zest, layered with hints of toasted almond, struck flint, and subtle vanilla from oak. The palate is finely textured, showing vibrant citrus and stone fruit alongside savoury cashew and brioche notes. A taut acid line carries through to a long, mineral-laced finish, making this a Chardonnay of both elegance and presence.
It is an ideal match for pan-seared scallops, roast chicken with preserved lemon, salmon with herb butter, or grilled zucchini and haloumi. While delicious now for its brightness and texture, it will develop richer, nuttier complexity over the next 5 to 7 years.
