Subdued in all ways, both aromatically and flavour-wise. A hint of lemon blossom, flint and cedary oak; the palate tight, slightly disjointed, although zesty acidity comes to the fore. It’s OK and could be in a dip or shy phase, although I believe it’s been out for at least a year by the time it landed on my tasting table.

Evans and Tate Redbrook Estate Chardonnay from Margaret River is a beautifully sculpted, quietly powerful and deeply expressive white that highlights why the Redbrook range sits among the region’s most consistently celebrated wines. Sourced from mature Wilyabrup and Karridale vineyards planted on ancient gravelly loam over clay, the fruit benefits from long, even ripening, cooling maritime winds and the natural acid retention that makes Margaret River one of the world’s great Chardonnay regions. The Evans and Tate team handle the fruit with meticulous care: hand picking at dawn, whole bunch pressing for purity, wild fermentation in French oak of varied ages and sizes, and extended time on lees to build complexity while preserving tension. The resulting wine is generous yet composed, savoury yet crystalline, carrying the distinctive coastal imprint that sets Redbrook apart.

The aromatics are layered and inviting. White peach, nectarine and lemon curd form the bright core, joined by grapefruit pith, pear skin and subtle melon. Lees ageing introduces almond meal, hazelnut, nougat and warm brioche, while the region’s mineral soils contribute hints of wet river stone, sea spray and flint. As the wine opens, notes of chamomile, vanilla bean, struck match and delicate spice add depth without overshadowing its elegant fruit profile.

The palate is poised and beautifully textured. Stone fruit, citrus and subtle tropical tones glide across a silken mid palate shaped by fine, savoury oak and time on lees. Flavours of peach skin, lemon zest, green apple, pear and toasted nuts unfold in gentle, balanced layers, lifted by bright natural acidity. A cool mineral line runs through the wine, giving definition and length. The finish is long, clean and quietly powerful, lingering with citrus oil, florals, brioche and a faint saline echo. With five to eight years in the cellar it develops deeper hazelnut, honeyed and truffle like complexity while retaining its coastal focus.

Ideal with roast chicken, grilled snapper, scallops in brown butter, lobster pasta, creamy vegetable dishes, mushroom and parmesan risotto, sushi or washed rind cheeses. It is a Chardonnay of finesse and substance, perfectly showcasing the classic Margaret River style.
