Georges Duboeuf Domaine de Javernières Morgon Côte du Py is a powerful and characterful Cru Beaujolais that comes from one of the most celebrated vineyard sites in the entire region. Côte du Py is the beating heart of Morgon, a hill of crumbling schist and volcanic rock that produces wines of remarkable depth, structure, and ageability—often compared to the finesse and complexity of fine Burgundy.
Georges Duboeuf, often called the "King of Beaujolais," was instrumental in bringing global attention to the potential of these crus. Though Duboeuf is often associated with the playful Nouveau style, his single estate and cru wines, especially those from Domaine de Javernières, show the serious and age worthy side of Beaujolais. Domaine de Javernières sits at the foot of Côte du Py itself and is farmed with great care to express the full personality of this iconic terroir.
The Gamay vines here are old, some more than 50 years in age, deeply rooted in the rocky soils that stress the plants just enough to produce intensely flavoured, concentrated grapes. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes that face southeast, soaking up morning sun and allowing for slow, even ripening.
Winemaking honours traditional methods. Fermentation is semi-carbonic, enhancing freshness while allowing serious tannin and mineral grip to develop. Ageing takes place in a mix of stainless steel and old oak to polish the wine without masking the vivid fruit and earthy complexity that Côte du Py is known for.
In the glass, Domaine de Javernières Morgon Côte du Py reveals dark cherry, blackberry, violets, and wet stone aromas with hints of licorice, spice, and forest floor. The palate is structured and deep, with fleshy black fruit, iron rich minerality, fine tannins, and a savoury finish that lingers. It has both immediate charm and serious ageing potential, often developing more Burgundian complexity with five to ten years in the cellar.
Perfect with chargrilled meats, duck confit, mushroom dishes, or even a simple roast chicken, this wine is a testament to why Morgon Côte du Py is considered one of the finest terroirs not just in Beaujolais, but in all of France.
