Gilles Robin’s Crozes-Hermitage Albéric is one of the Northern Rhône’s most soulful expressions of Syrah, a wine that marries finesse with a wild streak that feels utterly tied to its place. The Robin family has farmed these granite and loess slopes in Mercurol since the 1920s, but it was Gilles, taking over in the mid-90s, who turned the domaine into a benchmark for pure, expressive Syrah. Albéric is named in tribute to his grandfather, who first planted these vines—many of which are now more than 70 years old.
Organically farmed, hand-harvested, and made with minimal intervention, the Albéric comes from some of the domaine’s oldest parcels on the rolling hills just south of Hermitage itself. Whole bunch fermentation adds structure and spice, while ageing in old French oak casks allows the fruit to shine without distraction.
In the glass, it’s all about aromatic lift and savoury depth: violets, crushed blackberries, cracked pepper, cured meat, olive tapenade, and a whisper of smoky earth. The palate is vibrant and juicy, yet finely structured, with sinewy tannins and a stony, mouth-watering finish. It walks the line between power and elegance with classic Northern Rhône precision.
This wine is a joy with roasted duck, chargrilled lamb, or lentils with rosemary and pancetta. Cellar for 8 to 12 years and watch those gamey, tertiary notes unfold beautifully over time.
