Aromas of cherries, sweet berries and plums introduce Bouley’s 2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Rouge, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate with a sweet core of fruit, powdery tannins and an expansive finish. It saw some 30% new wood and spent its second winter in tank.

Jean Marc et Thomas Bouley Côte d’Or Bourgogne Rouge is a beautiful introduction to one of Volnay’s most respected families and to the elegance of Pinot Noir grown on the limestone spine of the Côte d’Or. This wine comes from carefully selected parcels around Volnay and Pommard, where clay limestone soils and a cool continental climate give Pinot Noir its perfume, freshness and fine tannin structure.

The Bouley family has been making wine in Volnay since the early 1900s, and today Jean Marc and his son Thomas run the domaine with a deep respect for tradition and an increasingly precise, terroir focused approach. They work with old vines, low yields and gentle handling in the cellar, allowing the vineyards to express themselves rather than chasing power or oak.

In the glass, the wine shows bright red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, lifted by rose petal, dried herbs and a subtle earthy note. The palate is finely boned and elegant, with lively acidity and silky tannins giving shape and length. It has all the charm and transparency that make Burgundy so captivating, without heaviness or excess.

This is a wonderful wine for the table. Roast chicken, duck, pork, mushroom dishes or classic French bistro fare all pair beautifully with its savoury and red fruited profile.

Jean Marc et Thomas Bouley Côte d’Or Bourgogne Rouge is delicious in its youth for its vibrancy and perfume, but it will continue to develop over five to eight years, gaining more earthy and savoury complexity. It is a refined, authentic Burgundy that shows just how much character can come from the Côte d’Or even at this level.
