Jim Barry Single Vineyard Watervale Shiraz is a brilliant example of what Clare Valley reds can achieve when grown in a district better known for Riesling. Jim Barry planted vines in Watervale decades ago, recognising that the elevated limestone and terra rossa soils could deliver not just crisp whites but also Shiraz of elegance and purity. Today, Peter, Tom and Sam Barry carry that vision forward, with a focus on single-vineyard bottlings that showcase the nuances of place.
The Watervale Shiraz comes from vines rooted deep in the valley’s famed red loam over limestone. This soil and the cooler nights here add freshness and definition to the fruit, producing a style that sits in contrast to the denser, more brooding Shiraz of the Barossa. The bouquet is lifted and aromatic, with black cherry, mulberry and violets framed by subtle spice, tobacco leaf and hints of cedar. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, showing layers of dark berry fruit, plum and gentle peppery spice carried by silky tannins and a fine acid line. The finish is long and savoury, marked by elegance rather than brute power.
Food pairings are wide-ranging: it’s outstanding with roast lamb shoulder and rosemary, venison pie with juniper, or even chargrilled eggplant with smoky paprika. It also works beautifully with hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté. Cellaring potential is strong, with 10 to 15 years of graceful development possible, as tertiary notes of leather, game and truffle emerge.
