Kaesler Barbera from the Barossa Valley is a vibrant, medium-bodied red that brings an Italian grape into Australian soil with impressive results. While Barbera is native to Piedmont, Kaesler gives it a distinctly Barossan twist — ripe and juicy, but still fresh and food friendly. It's a rare variety for the region, and Kaesler treats it with the same attention as their old-vine Shiraz, resulting in a wine that’s plush, savoury and seriously drinkable.
The fruit comes from low-yielding vines grown on red loam and sandy soils, which help retain acidity while building depth of flavour. Fermentation is in small open vats with gentle cap management, followed by ageing in seasoned French oak barrels for around 12 months. This approach preserves Barbera’s natural brightness and keeps oak influence subtle.
In the glass, it opens with aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, violets, and a hint of baking spice and earth. The palate is lively and smooth, with juicy red berry fruit, fine acidity and soft tannins. It finishes with a savoury edge and that signature Barbera freshness, making it an ideal wine for the table.
Food pairing: Excellent with spaghetti puttanesca, grilled sausages with fennel, mushroom pizza, or eggplant parmigiana. Also pairs well with firm cheeses like provolone or pecorino.
Cellar potential: Best enjoyed within 5 to 8 years of vintage, though it will evolve soft spice and earthy tones with time.
