Kurtz Family Vineyards Uncle Tony’s Mataro is a bold, earthy, and character-filled red that showcases the untamed charm of Mataro — also known as Mourvèdre — in the Barossa Valley. Named in honour of Uncle Tony, a figure remembered for his resilience and generosity, this wine reflects the same rugged warmth, offering dark fruit, spice, and a distinctly savoury edge.
The grapes are sourced from estate vineyards in the Light Pass subregion, where warm days and red-brown soils ripen Mataro fully while preserving structure and depth. Fermentation takes place in open-top fermenters, followed by maturation in seasoned oak to soften the edges and highlight the grape’s natural spice and meatiness.
On the nose, it opens with aromas of black plum, wild blackberry, clove, pepper, dried herbs and a touch of smoked meat. The palate is full bodied and savoury, with chewy tannins, dark cherry, liquorice, leather, and earthy spice. There's a rustic, old-school charm to the wine, but also polish and length that keep it compelling.
Food pairing: pairs brilliantly with slow-cooked lamb, chargrilled sausages, smoky eggplant, barbecued ribs or mushroom and lentil stew. Also great with aged cheddar or beef tagine.
Cellar potential: enjoyable now with a decant, but will develop beautifully over 6 to 10 years, gaining more leathery, gamey and spicy complexity.
