2022 La Spinetta Ca di Pian Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Piedmont

La Spinetta Ca di Pian Barbera d’Asti DOCG from Piedmont is a bold, polished red that delivers classic Barbera character with the distinctive energy and finesse La Spinetta is known for. Crafted by Giorgio Rivetti, this wine reflects both regional authenticity and the modern edge of one of Piedmont’s most respected family estates.

Sourced from estate vineyards around Castagnole and Costigliole d’Asti, the fruit benefits from calcareous soils and excellent southern exposure. These conditions allow Barbera to ripen fully while retaining its signature acidity and freshness. The Ca di Pian is aged in a mix of used French oak barriques, which round out the palate without masking the vibrant fruit.

In the glass, it offers aromas of black cherry, plum, violet, licorice and a touch of sweet spice. The palate is medium to full bodied, with juicy dark fruit, bright acidity and silky tannins. There’s a lovely balance between richness and lift, making it both food friendly and expressive on its own.

Perfect with pasta ragù, grilled pork, eggplant parmigiana or hard cheeses. It drinks beautifully now and will evolve over the next five to eight years.
