Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso offers blackcurrant, plum and spice with organic Tuscan depth, balance, finesse and complexity.
The nose opens with the sweet, indulgent layers of blackberries, blueberries and dark chocolate, before a riot of herbs, pepper and warm, iron-rich earth takes over. The palate is textured and substantial, even as the juicy berries pop open and flood the mouth. A rare treat to be able to have Cinzia Merli's wine at this price point.

This is really polished and gentle, with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It's medium-bodied with a creamy texture and a long and expressive finish of
red fruit, stone and thyme. Drink or hold.

Bolgheri has transformed from a quiet stretch of the Tuscan coast into one of Italy's most exciting wine regions, and few producers have played a bigger role in that story than Le Macchiole. Founded by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli in the 1980s, the estate quickly earned international acclaim for wines that combine power, elegance and a deep connection to place. Today, Cinzia continues to lead the winery, producing some of Tuscany's most admired and sought after wines through a commitment to organic farming and meticulous vineyard management.
The 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is sourced from organically farmed vineyards influenced by cooling Tyrrhenian Sea breezes and the region's distinctive mix of clay, limestone and alluvial soils. A blend of Bordeaux varieties with a touch of Mediterranean character, it reflects the modern style that has made Bolgheri famous. The warm growing season delivered ripe fruit while retaining freshness and balance, creating a wine of both immediate appeal and impressive structure.
Deep ruby crimson in colour, the bouquet opens with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and sweet spice. As the wine evolves in the glass, hints of Mediterranean herbs, dark chocolate and graphite emerge, adding complexity and depth. The palate is polished and beautifully balanced, delivering concentrated dark berry fruits, supple tannins and vibrant acidity. A savoury thread runs through the wine, while the finish is long, refined and persistent with lingering notes of spice and black fruits.
This is a superb match for grilled bistecca, slow braised beef, rosemary lamb, wild mushroom pappardelle or aged Pecorino. Approachable now with a decant, it will continue to reward cellaring over the next decade as additional layers of complexity emerge.
