Leeuwin Estate was one of the first in Margaret River to dabble in sparkling wine and I have to say it tends to slide under the radar with all the focus on its chardonnay and emerging reds. This is a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir displaying a creamy generous texture but then the lees and crisp acid tightens it nicely to focus through to a clean linear finish. Biscuity and light lemon curd aromas and a palate that is complete and long.

Leeuwin Estate Brut Sparkling from Margaret River is a refined and elegant sparkling wine that highlights the quality and potential of this renowned Australian wine region. Margaret River, with its maritime climate and diverse terroir, is perfectly suited for producing cool-climate sparkling wines, and Leeuwin Estate, known for crafting wines of exceptional quality, has mastered the art of producing a sophisticated and approachable sparkling wine.
The Leeuwin Estate Brut Sparkling is made using traditional sparkling wine techniques, with a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, a method that imparts the signature fine bubbles and creamy texture. It is aged on its lees for several months, which enhances the complexity, adding richness and depth without overwhelming the delicate fruit flavors. The result is a sparkling wine that strikes a perfect balance between freshness, complexity, and elegance.
In the glass, Leeuwin Estate Brut Sparkling has a pale gold color with a fine, persistent bead of bubbles that sparkle beautifully. The nose is inviting and aromatic, offering delicate notes of citrus, green apple, and pear, complemented by subtle floral aromas and a hint of toasted brioche and almond from the lees aging. These complex aromas make the wine both fresh and slightly nutty, adding to its overall sophistication.
On the palate, the wine is crisp and refreshing with a lively acidity that provides excellent structure and balance. The citrus and green apple flavors are bright and vibrant, while the creamy texture from the lees aging adds a richness that is well-integrated into the wine. The finish is clean, crisp, and satisfying, with lingering citrus and a touch of toastiness that leaves a lasting impression.
Leeuwin Estate Brut Sparkling is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its crisp acidity and fresh fruit flavors make it an excellent match for seafood, particularly oysters, prawns, or smoked salmon. It also pairs wonderfully with light appetizers like goat cheese, charcuterie, or a fresh green salad. For a more substantial meal, it complements dishes such as roast chicken, grilled fish, or creamy pasta dishes, making it an ideal all-rounder sparkling wine.
