The term Château is used far less commonly in Bourgogne compared to Bordeaux. French authorities allowed Latour to use Château Corton Grancey because of its historical significance. The wine, frequently just referred to as Grancey, is a blend of five of the Grand Cru lieux-dits on the hill of Corton: Perrières, Grèves, Bressandes, Clos du Rois, and Chaumes. The exact proportion each site contributes to the final wine depends on the vintage. Even though they own in Romanée St. Vivant and Chambertin, two more prestigious Grand Crus, their Corton Grancey is their flagship red wine in my mind. The 2022 Corton Grancey is breathtaking. It displays the iron-tinged and meaty essence of red Corton, and a sweet dark fruitiness all wrapped in elegant tannins. Its polished texture belies its power. The finish is seemingly endless. While captivating now, the 2022 Grancey will give fabulous rewards after a decade or two of cellaring.

97 points Wine Review Online

Rich and fleshy with a dark core of interwoven fine tannins and stony minerality. Fantastic concentration and yet so suave in spite of all the power. Very long, savory finish with delicate nuances of licorice and bitter chocolate at the dark and dangerous finish. A cuvee of wines from several of the best sections of the hill. Drink or hold.

Corton Grancey is one of the historic names of the Côte de Beaune, a blend drawn from several prime parcels on the Corton hill and a wine Louis Latour has championed for generations. The Latour family has been rooted in Burgundy since the 1700s, and Grancey remains one of their flagship reds, combining the scale and structure of Corton with a more polished, cellar worthy style.

The 2022 vintage brings both richness and energy. Dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum roll out first, layered with violet, clove and a gentle earthy note that slowly builds with air. There’s a warmth to the fruit from the vintage, but it never loses its Burgundian line.

As it opens, more savoury details emerge, forest floor, spice box and a touch of smoky oak sitting underneath the fruit rather than on top of it. It feels broad shouldered, but controlled.

There’s real authority here. Tannins are firm and finely woven, giving the wine a solid frame, while acidity cuts through and keeps everything moving. The fruit sits deep within the structure, and the finish carries on with dark berries, spice and a stony mineral edge that lingers beautifully.

This is where the table really matters. Slow roasted duck with cherries works brilliantly, but it’s equally at home with a wild mushroom pithivier, truffle laced lentils or charred eggplant with black garlic and thyme. Rich flavours and earthy notes seem to pull more complexity from the wine.

Still very young and best with a decant, it has the depth and balance to evolve comfortably over the next fifteen to twenty years.
