Dark nose that’s simultaneously charming and a bit mysterious, with a lot of spicy depth. Very fine tannins for the appellation, and they give this a velvety texture that’s so exciting. They build impressively in the long, complete finish. Such a delight already. Drink or hold.
95 points James Suckling
Pommard has always carried a more muscular reputation within the Côte de Beaune, though in the right hands the power comes wrapped in remarkable finesse. Louis Latour, one of Burgundy’s most historic family houses since 1797, has long excelled with the appellation’s structured Pinot Noir sites. Les Épenots is among the village’s most revered Premier Cru vineyards, producing wines that combine depth, earthy complexity and the sort of ageing potential collectors quietly chase for decades.
The 2022 vintage delivers both richness and precision. Dark cherry, black raspberry and plum lead into layers of forest floor, clove, dried rose petals and subtle smoky oak. Beneath the fruit sits that unmistakable Pommard character, all ironstone, earthy spice and savoury tension. The tannins are firm but beautifully polished, giving the wine shape and authority without overpowering its elegance. As it opens, more detail emerges with hints of black tea, mushroom and crushed herbs lingering through a long, mineral finish.
This is Burgundy for the dinner table rather than casual sipping. Duck breast with cherry glaze would be sensational, though the wine would also thrive beside roast quail, mushroom risotto or slow cooked beef bourguignon on a cold evening. A proper decant will reward early drinking, though patience will reveal even greater complexity over the next 12 to 15 years. There is real pedigree here, the kind of bottle that reminds you why great Pommard remains one of Burgundy’s most captivating styles.
