Maxwell GSM from McLaren Vale is a vibrant, medium to full-bodied red blend that captures the regional generosity of fruit with a savoury, spicy edge. Made from Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre grown on the estate’s vineyards in the limestone-rich slopes of McLaren Vale, this is a wine that’s bright, juicy and perfectly balanced between fruit and structure. It’s crafted in a style that draws inspiration from the Southern Rhône but speaks fluently in the rich tones of South Australian sunshine.
The blend varies slightly each year, but Grenache generally leads for perfume and red fruit, Shiraz provides mid-palate weight, and Mourvèdre adds structure and earthiness. Winemaker Mark Maxwell ferments each variety separately before blending and ageing in older French oak barrels to preserve vibrancy and texture.
In the glass, it shows lifted aromatics of raspberry, cherry, rose petal, dried herbs and white pepper. The palate is supple and layered, with silky tannins, bright acidity and flavours of red plum, licorice, baking spice and savoury earth. It finishes long and moreish with a lovely touch of crushed spice.
Food pairing: A fantastic match for roast pork with fennel, Moroccan lamb tagine, chargrilled vegetables with smoked paprika, or a mushroom and lentil shepherd’s pie. Pairs beautifully with aged Gouda or firm sheep’s milk cheeses.
Cellar potential: Delicious young for its brightness and lift, but will evolve well over 5 to 7 years as it gains savoury complexity and depth.
