Bright, elegant pinot noir with black cherry, floral/rose petal, vanilla, and spice supported by fine-grained acidity that gives the wine (there's no other way to describe this) a cooling effect in the same way that silk or satin can feel cool to the touch. Unique and distinctive wine. 30 Nov 2023 Drink 2023–2030

McArthur Ridge Wines Brassknocker Pinot Noir from Central Otago is a bold and expressive take on the region’s signature red. Sourced from the rugged Alexandra Basin, one of the driest and coolest parts of Otago, it’s a Pinot with plenty of attitude and just the right amount of polish. The vineyard sits on schist-rich soils with wide diurnal shifts, helping the fruit develop deep flavour while holding onto natural acidity.
The name Brassknocker is a nod to the area’s gold mining heritage.
Aromas of dark cherry, wild thyme and brambly red berries are followed by hints of clove, forest floor and a little smoky edge. It’s layered and lifted, with structure that speaks to Alexandra’s cooler conditions and a silky texture that gives it broad appeal. On the palate it’s medium bodied and vibrant, with juicy red and black fruit, fine tannins and a touch of spice and mineral tension through the finish. There’s a lovely balance of purity and earthiness that makes it feel both grounded and graceful.
Perfect with duck pancakes, roast beetroot and goat cheese salad, grilled lamb or mushroom ravioli. Whether you’re new to Central Otago Pinot or already a fan, this one delivers plenty of character and great value.
