Morgante Nero d'Avola Sicilia IGT is a benchmark example of Sicily’s signature red grape, crafted with both finesse and generosity by one of the island’s most respected family estates. Located in Grotte, in the deep south of Sicily’s Agrigento province, the Morgante family has been growing Nero d’Avola for five generations, and today they produce wines that reflect the rugged inland terroir with striking purity.
This Nero d'Avola is everything the variety should be when grown at altitude in warm, sun-drenched conditions with cooling breezes from the Mediterranean. The wine is deep ruby in colour and leads with aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, wild blackberry and dried Mediterranean herbs. There’s a touch of dark chocolate and liquorice, backed by earthy tones and sweet spice from well-judged aging in French oak.
The palate is rich yet elegant, with supple tannins, juicy acidity and layers of dark fruit, balsamic lift and a hint of savoury olive tapenade. It’s a bold wine, but never overbearing, showing the balance and freshness that make Nero d’Avola such a compelling variety when made with care.
Perfect with slow-cooked ragu, grilled lamb chops, eggplant parmigiana or Sicilian sausage and lentils. While it’s drinking beautifully now, it can also be cellared for another five to seven years to gain further complexity.
