2022 Mount Pleasant Rosehill Shiraz, Hunter Valley

A perfumed, vibrant, utterly delicious wine that draws you in with its wild raspberry aromas. On the nose, the clarity of fruit is spectacular, accented by dainty pink peppercorn spice followed by an intense, expansive palate of bright red fruit perfectly framed by tannin. This shiraz, sourced from one of the region's most historic vineyards, is a modern interpretation of a classic Hunter style, with graceful flow, medium body and mesmerising intensity.

An old-vine plot, within the lauded Rosehill site. Denser, sure. Sap and vinosity, impressive. A darker brood, laden with clove, anise, spruce and violet. Meaty. A swathe of extract coats the palate, yet the wine remains resolutely mid-weighted, fresh and fidelitous to a savory Hunter style that many of us have forgotten. Mercifully, this house is helping to revive it. A fine wine in the making.

Sweet-sour at first, potpourri, dried roses, something little dusty/sweet tobacco ash. Spice and dark fruit, blackberries and black plums and black cherries, a bit of a fruit cake, sage and fresh green coffee beans. It’s cool in flavours, with furry tannins, but sitting cosy across the tongue. Relaxed. There’s a hint of black olive in the mix too.

First planted by Maurice O’Shea in 1946, the Rosehill Vineyard is a wonderful site.  Producing wines that are quintessentially Hunter Valley, they are bright, red-fruited and elegant, with the ability to age gracefully for the long term.  This single vineyard wine is a representation of the best of this vineyard in that specific year of production.

Red fruit and floral notes with a lovely complexing spice note. An elegant focussed wine with lovely length and balanced, full of rich red fruits. Fresh and lovely as a young wine, the Rosehill Shiraz will reward those with patience, maturing in bottle for at least 25 years.
