This bottling, formerly from a historic site in Santa Barbara County but now 75% from Monterey County, brings a lot to the table for a favorable price. Aromas of citrus sorbet and wet stone lead from the nose into a palate offering brisk apple, more citrus and high acidity.

Citrus blossom, Meyer lemon and lime zest, and baked Granny Smith apple in nose. A bright and balanced acidity complements this medium bodied wine and finishes with flavors of pear tart.

Nielson Chardonnay from Santa Barbara is a vibrant and expressive wine that captures the essence of California’s cool-climate winemaking on the Central Coast. Named after Uriel Nielson, who planted the first commercial vineyard in Santa Barbara County in 1964, Nielson Wines has since become a pioneer in the region, focusing on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Santa Barbara. The region’s combination of coastal fog, cool breezes, and sunny days allows Chardonnay grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex flavors while retaining fresh acidity.

The Nielson Chardonnay is a refined balance of ripe fruit and subtle oak. On the nose, it opens with aromas of citrus zest, green apple, and stone fruits, underscored by hints of toasted almond and vanilla from gentle oak aging. The palate offers flavors of ripe pear, lemon curd, and a touch of tropical fruit, with a creamy texture that adds depth. Vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and balanced, leading to a lingering, mineral-driven finish. This wine pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including roast chicken, seafood, and creamy pasta, making it versatile for both casual gatherings and more formal meals.

This wine comes from two growing regions within Santa Barbara County, both of which are influenced by unique soil types and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Santa Maria Valley is one of California’s coolest AVAs with well-drained soils and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. When picked at earlier stages of ripeness, Chardonnay from the Santa Maria Valley shows more citrus notes, and as the fruit ripens on the vine, it becomes increasingly tropical in expression. Just south of Santa Maria Valley and Los Alamos, the Sta. Rita Hills AVA is characterized by steep vineyard slopes, a distinct saline minerality, bright citrus notes, and the signature Santa Barbara County ocean influence.
