2022 Ox Hardy Slate Shiraz, McLaren Vale

Fermented in the ancient Willunga slate fermenter that was revived some years back, this saw 16 months in older French oak. There’s a real elegance in the last two releases, both cool years, and this feels even more airy and open, poised and lightly framed. Blueberries, violets, nori, iodine, ground pepper and tart boysenberry, umeboshi, a lick of salt and anise pastille. It’s refined, transparent, absent of heft and invested in detail, the tannins softly caressing.

From the rugged slopes of McLaren Vale comes a Shiraz that reflects both the region’s power and its growing reputation for site driven expression. Ox Hardy represents the sixth generation of the legendary Hardy wine family, whose story in South Australia began in 1853. With his own label, Ox focuses on distinctive vineyard sites across McLaren Vale, crafting wines that highlight soil and microclimate. The Slate Shiraz is sourced from vineyards influenced by slate and rocky soils that bring structure and mineral edge to the naturally rich fruit of the region.

Deep crimson with dense purple hues, the aromatics are bold yet finely layered. Blackberry, dark plum and mulberry rise from the glass alongside cracked black pepper, clove and subtle cocoa. There is a savoury, mineral undertone that reflects the stony soils and adds depth to the bouquet.

On the palate it is full bodied and powerful, yet balanced with fine structure. Concentrated dark fruit forms the core, supported by firm, polished tannins and lively natural acidity. Notes of dark chocolate, spice and integrated oak unfold through the mid palate, leading to a long, savoury finish marked by black fruit and peppery complexity. It captures the richness of McLaren Vale Shiraz while retaining elegance and detail.

Pair with grilled ribeye, slow braised lamb shanks, smoky barbecue dishes or aged cheddar. While impressive now with careful decanting, this Slate Shiraz will cellar confidently for fifteen to twenty years, developing further savoury complexity and seamless integration.
