Few stories in Piedmont capture the spirit of a region quite like the famous cooperative of Barbaresco. Produttori del Barbaresco was founded in 1958 by the parish priest of the village, Don Fiorino Marengo, who united a group of local growers to protect the future of Nebbiolo in the tiny town of Barbaresco. Today the cooperative brings together more than fifty families farming some of the most important crus of the appellation. Each grower contributes fruit from meticulously tended vineyards rooted in the limestone rich marl soils that define the hills along the Tanaro River. The winery has become one of the most respected names in Italy, guided for decades by the legendary Aldo Vacca, with a philosophy centred on traditional fermentation and long ageing in large oak casks to let the purity of Nebbiolo and the voice of the terroir shine through.
The colour glows with classic translucent garnet tones. Fragrance rises immediately from the glass with aromas of rose petals, red cherry and wild strawberry, layered with hints of dried herbs, anise, tea leaf and subtle earthy spice. On the palate the wine carries the hallmark elegance of Barbaresco with finely structured tannins and vibrant acidity supporting flavours of sour cherry, cranberry, blood orange and delicate savoury notes. There is a graceful balance between perfume and structure that leads to a long lingering finish.
This is a beautifully authentic expression of Nebbiolo that can be enjoyed young with a short decant but will also develop further complexity over fifteen years or more. It pairs beautifully with slow braised veal, porcini mushroom risotto, duck ragù with pappardelle or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano.
