Whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight and racked to French barriques (33% new) the next day. Some mlf, depending on the acidity of each batch. A bright gold with green tinges. Aromas of yellow peach, hazelnuts, lemon oil and a little fresh vanillin bean from the wood are all present in this stylish and well-put-together wine. There's a gentle creaminess on the mid-palate before finishing saline and long.

Provenance was established in the mid-1990s around a simple idea of showcasing cool-climate vineyard sites across western Victoria. Owner and winemaker Sam Vogel works mostly with select vineyards across Henty, Ballarat and Geelong, with the Regional Series wines each a single vineyard portrait of their region.
The Henty bottling comes from the Doeven vineyard in the Drumborg sub-region, one of Australia's most extreme cool climate sites, located in far south-west Victoria where the influence of the Great Southern Ocean is ever-present. The vineyard grows in degraded volcanic buckshot topsoil over a permeable cracking red clay base — soils that stress the vines naturally and drive intensity without weight.
The 2022 growing season was the third consecutive cool year, with cold conditions through budburst and flowering delivering small crops and a later than usual harvest. Fruit was whole bunch pressed and settled overnight before being racked to predominantly seasoned French barriques where indigenous fermentation started slowly at cool temperatures. Partial malolactic fermentation was used selectively across barrels, allowing each to find its natural balance between depth and acidity.
The result is a Chardonnay of real tension and character. Bright gold with green tinges in the glass, the nose offers yellow peach, lemon oil, hazelnuts and a gentle vanilla thread from the oak. The palate is focused and precise, with a gentle mid-palate creaminess giving way to a saline, mineral finish that is distinctly coastal in feel. Elegant rather than showy and built to develop beautifully over the next three to five years.
Pour alongside freshly caught flathead or whiting, a simple chicken dish with lemon and herbs, or a well-made goat's cheese tart.
