A prototypical Rheingau BA with the combination of gigantically concentrated dried mango and papaya aromas with enormous wet stone acidity. The energy and purity of this wine are at least as amazing as its power and density. Still very young, but this will surely develop beautifully and has many decades of life ahead of it.

The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher Turmberg Beerenauslese was made from raisined fruit only, some with botrytis. The liquid is dark gold and viscous. There is only a faint botrytis note amidst the candied tangerine on the nose. The palate is super-concentrated, and there is a citrus thrill with more than 12g/L of acidity, spotting aromas of candied orange peel. This is luscious, shimmering with Navel orange, tangerine, Amalfi lemon and candied kumquat. Beautiful length. Wow. The citric zestiness lasts.

The golden-colored 2022 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Beerenauslese is fascinatingly clear, lemon-fresh and elegant on the precise but generous, intense and hedonistic nose that quotes ripe and stewed yellow stone fruit aromas. Generous and smooth but also finessed and saline on the palate, this is a savory, highly elegant and concentrated Turmberg BA whose richness (235 grams per liter of residual sugar) is uplifted by remarkable, finely grained acidity (12.5 grams per liter). 8.5% stated alcohol.

“Where would the Rheingau’s tradition of high-end Riesling dessert wines be today if it weren’t for Wilhelm Weil’s modern masterpieces in the style?”
Stuart Pigott, Best White Wine on Earth: The Riesling Story
Weil is widely considered one of the true greats of the sweeter Prädikat styles. One of the keys to this estate’s success with these wines is that the mountainous, rocky setting of the Kiedricher Berg vineyards allows for a perfect balance between natural sweetness, mouth-watering freshness and pungent, intense minerality.
These wines are staggeringly beautiful. They are all don’t-miss wines. As is so often the case, Weil’s 2022 Gräfenberg Spätlese exhibits textbook balletic poise between the wine’s natural sweetness and laser-like acidity. The grapes for Weil’s Auslesen were harvested without any botrytis influence. It is the kind of iridescent wine that has helped shape Rheingau’s legend for the past two centuries. What little botrytis did arrive in 2022 came in late October, giving the estate the opportunity to craft homoeopathic doses of BA and TBA. If your budget stretches this far, you will be rewarded with two of Germany’s more celebrated wines.
