A very great Rheingau TBA with enormous depth of dried tropical fruit and floral honey aromas. Very compact with a pronounced raciness that makes this taste lighter and much less sweet than it really is. Then comes the lightning strike acidity at the finish that illuminates the whole sky. Just keeps pumping out the succulent fruit at the super-fresh finish.

The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher Turmberg Trockenbeerenauslese is amber in color and was made from botrytised raisins. Wilhelm Weil emphasizes how clean this botrytis was. The nose bears witness to purest, candied and cooked peach flesh with the merest honey edge on the nose. The palate then plunges into acid-edged peach concentration, incredibly heightened, luscious and concentrated. Peach-saturated sweetness meets an incredible acidity of 13g/L. The combination of this kind of sweetness with this kind of thrill is unreal. This teeters between delicious extremes, echoing with aromatics that combine the most luscious peach and citrus you can imagine.

The golden-amber colored 2022 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese opens with a super clear, fresh, intense and elegant yet very rich and aromatic bouquet of stewed peaches and tea. Saline, savory and rich, with enormous and fine, lively and vibration-giving acidity of 13+ grams per liter, this is an enormously concentrated and challenging TBA for the next 10+ years. The sweetness isn't hidden and neither is the acidity, which makes it difficult to estimate the real value of this wine that isn't made for those who are born before 1980. 8% stated alcohol.

“Where would the Rheingau’s tradition of high-end Riesling dessert wines be today if it weren’t for Wilhelm Weil’s modern masterpieces in the style?”
Stuart Pigott, Best White Wine on Earth: The Riesling Story
Weil is widely considered one of the true greats of the sweeter Prädikat styles. One of the keys to this estate’s success with these wines is that the mountainous, rocky setting of the Kiedricher Berg vineyards allows for a perfect balance between natural sweetness, mouth-watering freshness and pungent, intense minerality.
These wines are staggeringly beautiful. They are all don’t-miss wines. As is so often the case, Weil’s 2022 Gräfenberg Spätlese exhibits textbook balletic poise between the wine’s natural sweetness and laser-like acidity. The grapes for Weil’s Auslesen were harvested without any botrytis influence. It is the kind of iridescent wine that has helped shape Rheingau’s legend for the past two centuries. What little botrytis did arrive in 2022 came in late October, giving the estate the opportunity to craft homoeopathic doses of BA and TBA. If your budget stretches this far, you will be rewarded with two of Germany’s more celebrated wines.
