Two parcels, one in McLaren Flat and the other Koomilya, Upper Tintara, two weeks on skins; matured in French oak puncheons. Black cherry, blackberry pastille, cherry cola, black jellybean, all sans confection, chinotto, leather, panforte spicing, scrubby herbs, a hint of violet or the like, the palate dutifully structured with classic tapas-beckoning tannins. It’s got a bit of intensity, presence, though it’s not big by any stretch. Very nice.

S.C. Pannell Dead End Tempranillo is a bold and expressive red from McLaren Vale that showcases Stephen Pannell’s flair for marrying Mediterranean varieties with South Australian terroir. Tempranillo has always been a bit of an outsider in Australia, but in the hands of Pannell—a winemaker known for championing climate-appropriate grapes—it becomes a vivid, deeply satisfying red that feels right at home.
The fruit is sourced from select vineyards across McLaren Vale, where the warm climate and cooling evening breezes help Tempranillo retain freshness while achieving full flavour ripeness. The wine is plush and generous, bursting with wild cherry, blood plum, earthy spice and dried herbs. There’s a savoury line through the palate that’s unmistakably Iberian, yet it’s layered with the generosity and drinkability that McLaren Vale does so well.
Structurally, Dead End hits a sweet spot: soft tannins, juicy acidity and a medium-full body make it incredibly versatile at the table. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled chorizo, or even mushroom tacos. It drinks well now but can easily cellar for 5 to 6 years if you're after something a little more evolved.
