Lively, fresh and flavoursome, perfect for charcoal-grilled fare
Hand-picked mataro from the parishes of Moppa, Vine Vale and Bethany; wild yeast ferment, 17% whole bunches, unfined and unfiltered. Vibrant, purple magenta in the glass with aromas of blueberry, satsuma plum and mulberry set on a base of exotic spice, pressed flowers, turned earth, roasting meats, amaro and just the right dial setting on the mataro 'garrigue'. Bottom line, it's a pure-fruited, exotic little number with a savoury flow, lovely billowing tannins and an air of effortless drinkability. Drink to 2039.
95 points Special Value Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion, May 2023
This is a purely fruited Mataro a.k.a. Mourvèdre or Monastrell. Whichever name you’d prefer, it’s a fantastic variety for warmer regions, and one of our favourites.
This wine opens with lively, joyful aromas of blue and black fruits covered in a fine dusting of cocoa, dried bush herbs and smoked biltong. The fresh palate follows suit with plentiful fruit flavours flanked by savoury notes and carried by fine tannins.
You could play with the wine's dark fruit to contrast it with rich, savory, and spiced dishes. Try with charcoal-grilled dishes: lamb kofta with sumac onions, or broccolini with Romesco and toasted almonds.
More about this wine
The Meta wines from Schwarz Wine Co. are regional blends of Barossa fruit. The 2023 season started in La Niña conditions, and the overall cooler temperatures required patience from most growers. The resulting wines are classically styled, balanced and elegant.
The wine is a blend of Moppa, Vine Vale and Bethany fruit. Each parcel was vinified separately with indigenous yeasts and small whole bunch inclusions in open fermenters. The must was pumped over daily, and foot stomped stomped towards the end of fermentation to break the skins on the whole bunches. The parcels were kept separate until final blending in August 2022. The final blend was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This wine is vegan friendly.
