Spinifex approaches Shiraz from a very different angle to the classic Barossa stereotype, leaning into detail, spice and structure rather than sheer weight. Pete Schell works with carefully selected parcels across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, often from cooler sites and older vines, aiming to capture a more savoury, northern Rhône-inspired expression while still reflecting the region's warmth.
The Miette is Pete Schell's introduction to the Spinifex range. Don't mistake it for an afterthought — it is made with the same care and philosophy as the more premium wines, just at a more accessible price.
Blackberry, mulberry and violet on the nose with hints of pepper and dark cocoa. The palate is medium-bodied and polished with fine tannins, a gently spicy finish and the kind of clean, lively acidity that keeps the fruit moving.
Poised and approachable, a midweek wine that doesn't ask too much of the occasion. Herb-crusted lamb cutlets with roasted garlic or a simple lentil and roasted tomato ragù with crusty bread would both be good company.
