Good depth of bright red-purple colour, pristine aromas of sweetly ripe black cherry with a kiss of spicy oak, fresh and bright primary fruit leads the way, the palate intense and medium-full for pinot noir, backed with surprising tannins that give a solid backbone and cleansing after-grip. A serious pinot noir that will reward cellaring for several years. 08 Jan 2024 Drink 2024–2036

Te Mata Alma Pinot Noir is a captivating wine from one of New Zealand’s most historic and revered estates. Te Mata Estate, founded in the 1890s and family-owned since 1919, is located in Hawke’s Bay, an area better known for its Bordeaux blends and Syrah. But Alma proves that Pinot Noir, in the right hands and on the right hillside, can flourish here with elegance and individuality.
Named in honour of Alma Buckley, the wife of Te Mata’s founder, this wine is sourced from estate vineyards in the cooler, elevated Havelock Hills. These clay-rich soils and sea-cooled nights provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Winemaker Phil Brodie, who has been with Te Mata since 1992, brings a refined touch to every stage of production, favouring gentle handling, wild fermentation, and aging in fine French oak.
The wine itself is deep and silken, with notes of wild cherry, cranberry, rose petal and spice. There’s a savoury thread too, with hints of forest floor and flint, anchored by fine tannins and fresh acidity. Alma walks the line between purity and complexity, showcasing both varietal charm and vineyard expression.
A natural match for duck breast, beetroot tart or porcini risotto. It’s drinking beautifully now but will develop gracefully over 7 to 10 years.
