There’s a purity and beauty to this that impresses you the minute you put your nose in the glass. So aromatic. Flowers, graphite, blackcurrants and hints of gunmetal. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that coat your mouth but give a feeling of fine cashmere. The length and intensity is calm but rather endless. 45% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon,10% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2028.

Sette Ponte has modified the viticulture, winemaking, and the composition of Oreno, their Bordeaux blend. The result—a magnificent wine. Amedeo Moretti Cuseri, Sette Ponte’s CEO, explains, “We want the wine to have more finesse.” Having tasted a twenty-year vertical of Oreno last year, I can affirm that they have succeeded admirably with the 2022. They are harvesting earlier to capture acidity, reducing the oak aging, and substituting some Cabernet Franc from the Merlot and Petit Verdot. The resulting lower volume allows us to hear the notes very clearly—and what wonderful notes. A panoply of flavors supported by suave tannins caress the palate. It is an iron fist in a velvet glove. Surprisingly lovely now because of its silky texture and impeccable balance, it will develop superbly over the next two decades. 97 Michael Apstein

Tenuta Sette Ponti Rosso di Toscana IGT Oreno is one of Tuscany’s most admired modern reds, a polished, powerful and beautifully sculpted Bordeaux blend that has become a fixture on collectors’ lists and critics’ top tens. The Oreno estate sits between Arezzo and Florence on rolling hills threaded by the historic “Seven Bridges Road”, with vineyards planted on deep clay, river stones, galestro and sand. These soils, combined with warm days, cool nights and long autumn ripening, give Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit of exceptional concentration, perfume and structural finesse. Antonio Moretti Cuseri’s team farms the vineyards with meticulous care, working vine by vine to achieve perfect ripeness.

The blend leans heavily on Merlot for plushness and dark fruit, Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and graphite precision, and Sangiovese for brightness, tension and Tuscan soul. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel for purity, followed by ageing in French barriques, largely new, which adds aromatic warmth, cocoa, cedar and silky tannin integration. The result is a wine that marries opulence with freshness, modern richness with classic poise.

The aromatics are deep and luxurious, offering black cherry, plum, blueberry and cassis alongside violet, tobacco leaf, cocoa, warm spice and a whisper of pencil shavings. With air, layers of nougat, sandalwood, black olive and sweet earth emerge, adding quiet complexity to the wine’s glossy core.

On the palate the wine is dense yet impeccably balanced. Dark fruits sweep across velvety tannins, guided by vibrant acidity that keeps the richness in perfect check. Flavours of blackberry, plum compote, graphite, cedar, espresso and savoury spice build through the mid palate into a long, focused and beautifully polished finish. The wine’s structure promises many years of evolution, easily ageing for ten to fifteen years as deeper truffle, cigar box and forest floor nuances emerge.

It is an ideal companion to bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef, duck breast, truffle pasta, roasted mushrooms, venison, aged pecorino or rich, slow cooked dishes with herbs and tomato.
