Shiraz and mataro are pretty good buddies. Here, it's a 51/49% split, with the shiraz hailing from Koonunga and Tanunda and the mataro from Ebenezer (north) and Williamstown (south). There's some really nice plump plum and black fruits onboard this year. As expected, there is an array of spice and meaty goodness, deep, chalky tannins and a long, dark-fruited draw at the tail.

Teusner The Independent Shiraz Mataro is a bold, expressive red from the heart of the Barossa Valley, showcasing the region’s muscular fruit profile with a modern sense of balance and drinkability. This blend brings together the rich, plummy generosity of Shiraz with the earthy structure and spice of Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre, in a way that’s distinctly Barossan yet surprisingly refined.
Winemaker Kym Teusner is known for championing old vines and traditional vineyard sources while crafting wines with energy and approachability. The fruit for The Independent is sourced from trusted growers across the Barossa, many of whom farm low-yielding, dry-grown bush vines on deep red clay and sandy loam soils. Fermentation is done in small batches, followed by maturation in seasoned French oak to preserve freshness and fruit purity.
In the glass, this wine opens with aromas of blackberry, plum, dark cherry, black olive and dried herbs, laced with warm spice and a touch of anise. The palate is plush and dark-fruited, yet it carries a savoury edge from the Mataro, with chewy tannins and lively acidity giving it focus and length.
Perfect with barbecued ribs, lamb souvlaki, spiced lentil stew or sharp aged cheddar. Drink it now for its generosity or cellar for up to 8 years to develop more savoury nuance.
