2022 The Lane Vineyard Estate Syrah, Adelaide Hills

Beautiful example of an Adelaide Hills Syrah, with that cooler climate influence clearly pointing to the use of the word Syrah in the wine. The aromas are spicy, black fruited, dark chocolate, and a slight toast and cinnamon combination. Palate offers plenty. It’s rich and textured, albeit in that medium-bodied structure with the fine, chalky tannins and the well-applied oak helping to focus through to a long finish. In fact, it had about 20 months in French oak, but it’s been neatly integrated and seamlessly managed to produce an excellent wine. Drink to 2038.

Feel the harmony present in this wine where every individual element combines oh so effortlessly and so elegantly. The Syrah – aka Shiraz – grape now shares top red grape billing in the Adelaide Hills and it’s easy to see why. Works the spice and lively ripe fruit qualities achieved in the Hills’ cool climate and there’s that harmony combining plum, black berries, earth, arresting florals, Aussie bush and smart oak, the latter the result of 20 months in French oak. Oak has been slurped up and combined bringing solid integration and overall balance. Makes for an engaging, smooth textural, complex flow that is spice-fuelled with a lively gentle pepperiness. Hard to ask for more unless you are considering cellaring. Drink to 2032.

The Lane Vineyard is a family-owned Adelaide Hills property established in 1993. With an elevation of 370 to 450 metres, its Balhannah vineyards are divided across numerous parcels, each offering differing aspects of the rolling hills of ancient gravelly soils, while fruit is also sourced from other growers in the broader region.

The business is certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, which looks at all aspects of wine production from vineyards to winery, and encapsulates protection of local bushland and wildlife.
