Umani Ronchi Pecorino IGT I Sassi from Abruzzo is a vibrant, aromatic white that captures the tension and textural charm of one of central Italy’s most exciting native grape varieties. Pecorino, once nearly extinct, has made a remarkable comeback thanks to its natural acidity, floral perfume and ability to reflect site. In I Sassi, Umani Ronchi highlights the grape’s freshness and complexity with a modern, elegant touch.
Sourced from hillside vineyards in the Teramo area of northern Abruzzo, the grapes are grown in calcareous-clay soils at altitude, which helps retain bright acidity and mineral lift. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, followed by a short period on lees to build mouthfeel without compromising purity.
The nose is fresh and expressive, with aromas of white peach, acacia, lemon balm, wild herbs and a hint of fennel. On the palate, it’s medium bodied, zesty and textural, showing flavours of citrus, pear skin, green apple and almond. There’s a lovely savoury note on the finish — a nod to Pecorino’s wild, herbal character — with crisp acidity and a saline, chalky edge.
Food pairing: ideal with grilled white fish, seafood linguine, chicken with herbs, soft cheeses or vegetable tarts. Also excellent with fresh salads, shellfish, or light antipasti.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed within 3 to 5 years to capture its aromatic freshness and gentle structure, though it can develop subtle nutty notes with short-term ageing
