2023 All Saints Estate Pierre, Rutherglen

58/33/9% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc. Pierre was the nickname given to the late Peter Brown, and it is Peter whom this elegant, well-composed Bordeaux-blend wine honours. Cabernet stands as the solid basis, the core, for a wine that is then dressed in florals and spice courtesy of its mates. Black fruits, herbals and leafy cabernet fruit mix with violet, savoury black olive, jalapeño, anise and vanillin oak. It's already nicely balanced in its youth, driving long, aided by firm tannins. Drink to 2035.

Good depth of colour; fumy, cedar/tobacco, and earthy undergrowth aromas, the palate has a sinewy feel and a certain leanness. Bayleaf, dried herb nuances. This has medium-full bodied, ready drinkability and is nicely balanced. Drink to 2035.

Named in honour of the late Peter Brown (Pierre to his school mates) on his 60th birthday in January 2005, this Bordeaux-style red blend fermented in open concrete vats at the historic All Saints castle. Hand plunged two to three times per day during fermentation, it was pressed off in a 1870s basket press and aged for 18 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak.

The perfect wine for a family gathering around a roast leg of lamb, this is drinking well now but has years ahead of it if you’re interested in stashing a few bottles away.

All Saints Estate is a family-owned winery established in 1864 on the banks of the Murray River in Wahgunyah of northeastern Victoria. Siblings Eliza, Angela and Nicholas Brown have been the custodians of the original estate as well as the neighbouring St Leonards Vineyard since 2005. Their father having been one of the Brown Brothers of Milawa, they are also actively involved in the management of Brown Family Wine group, which in addition to Brown Brothers also includes the premium wine labels Pirie and Tamar Ridge, and the widely distributed Innocent Bystander and Devil’s Corner.

Their two Rutherglen properties are home to 76 hectares of vines, many of which date back to the early to late-1900s. The family also acquired and restored the tiny historic 1891 half-hectare Mount Ophir vineyard in 2016, and is today producing a single, premium Shiraz from this site.
