Vinous and fragrant nose of strawberries and fresh violets with touches of cinnamon, rhubarb and pepper. Light-bodied on the palate, it shows drinkability, silkiness, crisp acidity and a graceful aftertaste.

The Antinori Pian delle Vigne Rosso di Montalcino is a wonderfully expressive introduction to the elegance of Tuscany’s Montalcino, crafted by one of Italy’s most legendary wine families. The Antinori name has been synonymous with Tuscan winemaking for over six centuries, and their Pian delle Vigne estate, just a few kilometres south of the town of Montalcino, is a jewel in the portfolio. The estate takes its name from a 19th-century railway line that still crosses the vineyard, a reminder of the deep connection between land and history. With vineyards sitting at around 200 metres on clay-rich soils, Sangiovese Grosso here produces wines that are supple, aromatic and approachable in youth.

In the glass, the Rosso di Montalcino shows bright ruby red hues. The nose is charming and open, full of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and wild strawberry, lifted by hints of violet, dried herbs and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky, with juicy red fruit flavours balanced by fine tannins and lively acidity. Subtle notes of tobacco, cedar and mineral earthiness give complexity without overwhelming the fresh fruit core. The finish is long, elegant and mouth-watering, making it an easy wine to enjoy now while still reflecting the nobility of its Brunello sibling.

This Rosso is a versatile partner at the table. Pair it with roast pork with fennel, handmade pappardelle with ragù, grilled veal chops, or Tuscan pecorino. It is designed to be enjoyed in its youthful vibrancy but can cellar gracefully for 5 to 7 years, developing savoury notes of leather and dried flowers.

Critics often praise Pian delle Vigne Rosso di Montalcino for delivering true Montalcino character in a more accessible form than Brunello, highlighting its elegance and value. For those wanting a taste of Antinori’s craftsmanship without waiting decades, this Rosso is the perfect choice.
