Antonio Camillo Ciliegiolo Maremma Toscana DOC is a bright, juicy and utterly charming red wine that showcases one of Tuscany’s lesser-known native grapes in all its vibrant glory. Ciliegiolo, often a blending partner in Chianti, is given star billing here by Antonio Camillo — a specialist in indigenous Maremma varieties who has spent decades working in the vineyards of southern Tuscany. His wines are celebrated for their authenticity, energy and sense of place.
Sourced from old vines grown organically on sandy, volcanic and clay-rich soils in the coastal Maremma zone, this Ciliegiolo is fermented with native yeasts and aged in concrete tanks. There’s no oak, no makeup — just a pure, honest expression of the grape and the land.
The nose is fragrant and red-fruited, with aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, and a touch of Mediterranean herb. On the palate, it’s light to medium bodied with silky tannins, fresh acidity and flavours of cranberry, red plum, and a subtle earthy note. There’s a lovely transparency and energy to the wine, finishing crisp, dry and refreshing.
Food pairing: ideal with tomato-based pasta, roast chicken, grilled vegetables, salumi, or Pecorino cheese. Also excellent slightly chilled with pizza or lighter Mediterranean dishes.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed young and vibrant within 3 to 5 years, though it may gain savoury nuance with short-term ageing.
