Ata Rangi Pinot Gris from Martinborough is a beautifully textured and aromatic white that perfectly captures the elegance and precision for which this acclaimed estate is known. Crafted by winemaker Helen Masters, it reflects Ata Rangi’s belief that Pinot Gris should be a wine of depth and character rather than simple fruitiness. With grapes sourced from mature vines grown on the free-draining alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terrace, this wine offers both generosity and finesse, shaped by careful handling and a deep understanding of the region’s cool climate.
The fruit is hand picked and gently whole bunch pressed, with fermentation taking place partly in stainless steel and partly in seasoned French oak barriques using wild yeasts. Lees ageing for several months adds texture and savoury nuance, while the use of both dry and slightly richer parcels creates a wine of balance and harmony.
In the glass it shows pale gold with silver reflections. The aroma is expressive and layered, revealing pear, white peach and quince alongside hints of jasmine, spice and wet stone. The palate is silky and rounded yet beautifully fresh, with flavours of ripe orchard fruit, almond and subtle citrus framed by fine acidity and a long, mineral finish. The result is a wine that feels both luxurious and poised, capturing the Martinborough signature of purity and restraint.
It pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, pork belly, creamy pasta with herbs, or seafood dishes like scallops and crab. It also suits lightly spiced Asian cuisine and soft cheeses. Delicious now for its richness and perfume, it will develop added honeyed complexity over the next five to seven years.
