Medium-full colour with a faint tint of purple in the meniscus. A basket of fragrant herbs and red fruits greets the nose: red cherry, raspberry and strawberry included. The wine is supremely elegant in the mouth, intense and focused, finely-grained tannins supporting the ethereal fruit, acidity cleansing the finish. A lovely wine, still very young, promising much more if left in the cellar for a few years. 30 Jan 2025 Drink 2026–2038

This release has its cards kept close to its chest. It's floral and strawberried and earthen, with potpourri and general (dried) herb notes littered throughout. It's also strung with fine-grained, minerally tannin, which, combined with the wine's herbal, tonic-like notes, is the perfect foil to the prettiness of the florals. And yet still it feels as though we're dealing with an infant here; it hasn't yet properly bloomed. When it does, it will be beautiful. This is on its way to being light, lacy and lovely, the latter from myriad angles.

Great Western Old Vine Pinot Meunier is a rare and intriguing gem from Victoria’s Great Western region. Known primarily for its Shiraz, this area’s cool climate offers a unique opportunity to showcase other varieties with precision, and Pinot Meunier is an unexpected, yet spectacular, standout. Best’s winemaker, Justin Purser, is known for his dedication to quality and a subtle, hands-off approach that allows the vineyard's true character to shine. This Pinot Meunier, sourced from the estate’s old vines, is a fascinating example of what this underappreciated variety can offer when treated with care and expertise.
The fruit comes from vines that have stood the test of time—mature vines that yield low quantities of intensely flavored grapes. These old vines, nurtured in the region’s deep, fertile soils, are the foundation for a Pinot Meunier that combines richness with delicate finesse. Justin Purser’s skill lies in capturing the balance between the wine’s fruit-forward character and the nuanced layers developed through careful winemaking and maturation.
On the nose, the aromas are a beautiful blend of red fruits, with ripe cherries, strawberries, and raspberries leading the charge. There’s also a hint of spice, subtle floral notes, and an intriguing minerality that hints at the cool-climate origins. As you take a sip, the palate opens with a burst of vibrant fruit, followed by a smooth texture and refined tannins. The fruit flavors are juicy and fresh, with strawberry and raspberry being the most prominent, and there’s an undercurrent of earthy complexity—think of a forest floor or a slight herbal note—that adds depth and interest. The acidity provides a lift, making each sip feel clean and balanced, while the finish lingers with a gentle warmth and a touch of spice.
This Pinot Meunier is an excellent companion for a wide range of dishes. It pairs beautifully with lighter meats, such as roasted duck or grilled chicken, as well as earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or charcuterie. Its freshness and complexity also make it a great match for a variety of cheeses, from creamy Brie to sharp blue varieties. Whether served at a celebration or as part of a quiet evening, this is a wine that invites exploration and appreciation.
