A tribute to family and to the roots of Cahors, Marcel is named after the Verhaeghe brothers’ father and captures a more classic, unadorned expression of Malbec. At Château du Cèdre, Pascal and Jean Marc have spent decades refining their vineyards on the limestone terraces above the Lot River, farming organically and focusing on purity. Marcel sits as a more traditional take within the range, less about polish, more about character and place.
The aromatics lean into the darker side of Malbec, black plum, blackberry and cassis, with a rustic edge of earth, leather and a touch of spice. There is a hint of violet in the background, but it is the savoury notes that give it personality, a nod to Cahors’ old school style.
On the palate it is firm and structured, with grippy tannins that speak of both grape and region. The fruit is there, but it is framed by earthy, slightly smoky tones and a dry, savoury finish that lingers. It feels honest and grounded, a wine that is more about the table than sipping on its own.
This is built for hearty food. Slow braised beef, duck confit, cassoulet or even a simple grilled steak with garlic and herbs all work beautifully, the wine’s structure cutting through richness with ease.
Give it a few years and it will settle, the tannins softening and more complex notes of leather, tobacco and forest floor coming forward. Five to ten years will see it in a very good place.
